Transnasal Oesophagoscopy

Transnasal oesophagoscopy is a undertaken in the outpatients clinic and allows visualisation of the upper oesophagus (The part of the digestive tract connecting the throat to the stomach).

The procedure is useful for evaluation of patients suffering with:

• Difficulties in swallowing (dysphagia)
• Feeling of a lump in throat (globus)
• Laryngopharyngeal reflux
• Chronic cough

The procedure is only undertaken at The Bridge Clinic, Maidenhead.

You will be asked to not eat or drink anything for two hours prior to the procedure.

Mr Moorthy will discuss the procedure in detail. If you are happy to proceed a local anaesthetic spray is used to numb the nose and throat (therefore no hot food and drink is allowed for two hours after the procedure).

The transnasal oesophagoscope is gently inserted into the nose and passed into the throat. You will then be asked to take a small sip of water. As you swallow the transnasal oesophagoscope is gently passed into the oesophagus.

After visualising and videoing the upper oesophagus the transnasal oesophagoscope is gently removed.

Mr Moorthy will discuss the findings with you and any further management after the procedure.
